would the sensor pick up the distance to the trailer or the trailer tongue?

On the Hopkins Backup Sensor System, part # HM60100VA, the sensors can be adjusted up and down. If the sensor is adjusted down to pickup the trailer tongue then it will pickup the tongue first. If the adjustment is higher it might only pickup the trailer.
