You can use the Ranch Hitch Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Coupler Adapter with 8 Inch Offset, # AM3139, to tow your fifth wheel trailer with your 2010 GMC 1500 Short Bed. This coupler adapter will provide additional clearance when turning than what you would have with a coupler adapter without an offset, however, it is not designed to prevent contact between your truck cab and trailer when making a 90 degree turn.

If you are looking for a product that will allow you to safely execute a 90 degree turn, then you will want to do some measuring to determine what products you will need. We will need to use the following formula (A +/- B) – C = Clearance

The first measurement that you will need is from the center of the head of the fifth wheel hitch to the back of your truck cab. This measurement will be different from truck to truck, but on your 2010 GMC 1500 short bed, this measurement will be approximately 28 inches if you have a 5 ft 8 in bed or it will be approximately 38 inches if you have a 6-1/2 ft bed. We will call this measurement A.

Next, you will need to measure from the center of the king pin to the front edge of your trailer. This will be measurement B. You will add this to measurement A if the king pin sits in front of the front edge of the trailer, or you will subtract this from measurement A if your king pin sits behind the front edge of your trailer.

Finally, you take half of the width of the nose of your trailer, which we will call measurement Cc and subtract that from the sum or difference between measurements A and B. That will give you the amount of clearance that you will have between the cab of your truck and fifth wheel trailer when making a 90 degree turn. You will need a minimum of 4 inches of clearance to safely make a 90 degree turn.

For example, If the center of the king pin of your fifth wheel trailer is 4 inches in front of the front edge of your trailer, then you will add 4 inches to the 38 inches if you have a 6-1/2 ft truck bed. This will give you 42 inches. If you have a 96 inch wide trailer, you will take half of that which is 48 inches and subtract that from 42 inches giving you -6 inches.

To make up for the 6 inch difference and to give you the additional 4 inches of clearance needed to safely make a 90 degree turn, you can use a sliding fifth wheel hitch like the Pro Series 20K Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch, # PS30121 and Installation Kit, # RP50064-58. This hitch will give you 10 inches of additional clearance.

I have attached a photo showing the different measurements that I have discussed. If you want to send me the width of your trailer, the length of the truck bed on your truck and the distance from the center of your king pin to the front edge of your trailer, then I can make a more specific recommendation for you.
