How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

Hi, Ive owned my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 QC, 5.9 since 2005. All this time I have had a small flat connector, with VTP labeled on it, it glows red and I thought it was a trailer brake controller connector. Its mounted on the bottom of the lower dash, in the location most controllers are placed. I have just purchased a trailer to haul my car and I have been looking for the brake controller that connects to this connector. So far I havent had much luck searching for it. Can anyone help me? Maybe it isnt a brake controller plug but something else. Picture provided. Thank you

I'm not quite sure what that VTP connector is for but I can definitely help you install a brake controller on your 2002 Dodge Ram 1500.

For your application I recommend using the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 because it is a cost-effective controller that is still very reliable which is demonstrated with the limited lifetime warranty and great customer reviews. If you have a factory 7-Way trailer connector at the rear your pickup then all you need is the Adapter # 3020-P which connects to a blue plug under the driver's side dash. If you have a factory 4-Way trailer connector at the rear of your pickup then you need the same adapter plus the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7.

If you don't have any trailer connector at the rear of your pickup then you need a 4-Way connector, I recommend the Curt T-Connector # C55504 that plugs in behind your tail lights, as well as the Wiring Kit # ETBC7. For this application you will be routing all of the needed wiring.

I have attached a helpful article that walks you through the process no matter what wiring configuration you have as well as some review videos you can reference.
