Expert Reply:
Sway control bars, like the Curt # 17200, battle trailer sway using friction as the bar slides in and out. It has pads that the bar slides against creating the friction to fight sway. Unfortunately, creating friction in the manner is far from quiet but it's necessary to do its job. Anything you do to reduce the noise, such as lubricating the arm that rubs against the friction pads, will not only reduce the noise but also reduce the effectiveness of the entire unit.
