Best 7-Way Plug Option and Brake Controller For 2016 Toyota Highlander With Tow Package
Question:
I have an existing curt 56217 4 pin in my 2016 highlander, I need to install a 7 pin and brake controller, what do you suggest?

Expert Reply:
I suggest using the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit part # ETBC7L and the Curt Echo part # C51180 because of the ease of installation and convenience. The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller just needs the basic trailer lighting functions and 12V power to be fully operational. Just wire the 12V black wire from ETBC7L to the vehicle's battery via the circuit breaker, ground the white wire and connect the 4 pin to the 4 pin portion of the plug shown in the picture I attached. The rest of the wires can be tucked away and you now have a 7-way trailer connector on the Highlander.
The Curt Echo then plugs in line with the 7-way and connects to your smart device for operation instead of the traditional bulky brake controller box on the dash. The Echo is designed for trailers with up to 2 axles (4 brake assemblies). I have attached a installation on a 2019 Toyota Highlander.
