Brake Controller Installation and Recommendation for 2012 GMC Canyon With Factory 7-Way
Question:
2012 GMC Canyon. Seams to have factory 7 pin plug and harness under pickup with Hopkins GM tag on them.think I need controller under dash? I purchased truck new so it hasn’t been messed with have towed a lot but would like to complete brakes have Aluma 16’ tandem, haul street rod truck has v/8 and weighs 4500 lbs. help

Since you have the factory 7-way on your 2012 GMC Canyon you do not need to run any more wires, though you will need to hardwire some controllers, such as the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 or Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR. If you take a look at the photo I added you can see where the wires will be under the dash on your '12 Canyon. I have also added a link to a video of a brake controller being installed on a GMC Canyon so you can see how it is done.
You can also bypass that wiring entirely with a wireless brake controller and I highly recommend the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller - Wireless # C51180 because you only have to plug it into your 7-way and not worry about any connecting wires or having a bulky unit in the cab of your truck. It will work perfectly with your tandem axle Aluma trailer to give you smooth, proportional braking.
