Spare Tire Carrier Compatible with Extension for Truck Bed Camper and Utility Trailer

Question:

When my 10.5’ camper is on my truck the factory spare tire setup is pretty much useless, so I am researching options. Roadmaster literature refers only to “flat towing”, as in a tag-a-long, but I often pull a lightweight 4.5’x8’ utility trailer behind my camper with kayaks and camp gear. I use a 36” hitch extension from the 2” truck hitch for this purpose. My numbers: factory tongue weight rating on the truck is 1,800 lbs. The hitch extension reduces this to 900 lbs, per your site. The Roadmaster attached to that extension would further reduce tongue capacity by 1/3, to 600 lbs, but the Roadmaster limit itself is 400 lbs, so that becomes my tongue weight limit, well within the numbers above. Loaded trailer weight is 1,200 - 1,500 lbs I estimate tongue weight at 150 lbs max. I age 77 can easily lift the tongue off the hitch ball and jockey the trailer around by hand. I’m not seeing the reason I could not use the Roadmaster 195225 with this trailer setup. Thanks for your help, and for your excellent website! Yes, if I have the trailer with me I have used that for the spare, but I am often using the camper without the trailer, and would hope to avoid relocating the spare each time I change configurations.

The Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier w/ 2" Receiver Opening - 2" Hitches # RM-195225 has a tongue weight limit of 400 lbs as you stated but it is only to be used for flat towing and not for trailer use and is also not compatible with an extension.

My recommendation for your application is to use a stacked receiver ball mount like the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/ Stacked Receivers - 2" Hitch - 7-1/2" Drop/Rise - 16K # 325-GH-514 to give you the option of a spare tire carrier like # C31006 as well as the ball mount for your trailer without further reducing your tongue weight or towing compatibility. You simply need to make sure you add the 38 lb ball mount, the 18 lbs spare tire carrier # C31006, and the weight of the spare to that tongue weight when using your extension. Then when towing the trailer also adding that loaded trailer tongue weight. If you are within the numbers, you will be good to go.
