Correct Trailer Hitch for a 2006 BMW 530XIT Wagon To Use with Bike Rack
Question:
I am looking for a hitch for a 2006 BMW 530XIT E61. Must be for Wagon. Can I use the 1 1/4inch to 2inch receiver adapter on this trailer hitch? I want to use my Thule swing-away bike rack that Ive been using on my 2008 Toyota Highlander. I was hoping this adapter would allow me to avoid buying another bike rack. Also didnt know if you really need the stabilizing strap with the Thule bike carrier. I never needed one when I mounted it on the Highlander but it is a Class 2 hitch. Thanks.

I can confirm that the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11498 is a fit for your 2006 BMW 530XIT Wagon. It is also the only trailer hitch we have for this vehicle. You can use a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter with this trailer hitch but not just any one. It needs to be class I rated like the Brophy Hitch Adapter part # HT5R or part # HTAD. This will then allow you to use your Thule Swing Away Bike Rack but please keep in mind that the adapter (as with all hitch adapters) reduces your tongue weight capacity by 50%. This means the weight of the bike rack and your bikes cannot exceed 100 lbs.
That said, this does not leave you with a lot of room to work so I recommend a new bike rack, the Thule Camber 2 # TH9058. In regards to the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap for Hitch-Mounted Accessories part # 18050, I really do recommend this for you to help aid with stability. The 2" trailer hitch you had on your Highlander is much more stable so you wouldn't need it in this case.
