Best Weight Distribution System For Towing a 7,000 Lb GVWR Trailer with a 2015 Dodge Durango

Question:

Hello I’m considering a 2015 Durango with the V8 to tow my travel trailer. My TT weight is 4750 dry and I estimate 6000 lbs when I head out. It’s also 30 ft long. This seems to be well inside the specs for the Durango. However, I’m concerned with the short wheel base of the Durango. My current weight distribution hitch is a simple older Reese round bar hitch with a friction antisway bar. My question is can I tow my TT with a 2015 V8 Durango and is there a hitch that would be better at mitigating the short wheel base? Also is there a recommended brake controller?

The towing capacity of your 2015 Dodge Durango with the 5.7L V8 is 7,200 lbs for AWD models or 7,400 lbs for 2WD models. Therefore, you should not have any issues at all in regards to weight. As a general rule, the vehicle's wheelbase should be at least half of the distance from the center of the trailer's rearmost axle to the center of the coupler. However, this is more of a conservative figure I will admit. That said, a good weight distribution system should alleviate any concerns with wheelbase or weight capacity in your setup.

The best weight distribution system we have for you is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System part # RP66083. This system has integrated four point sway control which will be a night and day difference over the friction sway control bar you have now and the trunnion spring bars are going to provide much more ground clearance than the round bars you have now and this will be needed for your Durango. This system also has a lifetime warranty. The only other thing you will need is a hitch ball, part # 19286.
