How Would a 2000 GMC Sonoma Activate the Brakes of a Traile
Question:
If I purchase/install a trailer hitch on my 2000 GMC Sonoma do I have to run an entirely new and separate brake line or does GMC provide an attachment clip-on point located at the rear bumper specifically for after market trailers?

To activate the brakes of your trailer will require you to install a brake controller. There isn't a way to tie your vehicle braking system into the braking system of a trailer but you can install a brake controller in your 2000 GMC Sonoma so that it can activate them as needed. A brake controller is a device that is designed to activate trailer electric brakes by using a signal with varying voltage to apply the brake either lightly or heavily. Proportional brake controllers are the way to go as they sense the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a relative amount of trailer braking to provide a smooth and safe braking experience.
You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 118359.
From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional style controller that works better than anything out there and is very reliable.
