Long and Short Ball Mount Options for a 2012 Toyota RAV4 Towing a Boat and Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 20foot boat to tow with my 2012 RAV4 V6 with the 13509 Curt Receiver Hitch. Is the Ball Mount long enough to clear the Spare Tire on the back and have enough left for the trailer to turn? Please advise. Thank you.

Expert Reply:

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole on ball mount # AMSC2 it measures 9-1/2 inches. This should put the ball about flush with the back of the spare tire on a 2012 Toyota RAV4 based on installations we have done. Measure your specific vehicle to be certain.

Boat trailers generally have a coupler at the end of a long pole tongue. And the shape of most boats combined with the pole tongue would allow you to easily make turns without any interference issues.

However, if you take the measurements and think that there could be issues based on your boat and trailer set up, you can get a longer ball mount. For a few additional inches, you can use Curt ball mount # D-4 which is 10-1/4 inches to the center of the ball hole. This ball mount has a 7,500 pound capacity.

The next step up is a Brophy ball mount, # BM20 that measures 13-1/4 inches to the center of the ball hole. This ball mount has a 10,000 pound capacity.

For the longest ball mount we carry, we have the Brophy ball mount, # EA40, that measures 14-5/8 inches to the center of the ball hole. It has a 8,000 pound capacity.
