You can tow a small trailer with your 2005 Chevy Malibu Maxx, and you can definitely use the 2" Hitch Ball # C40018 which has a 3,500 lb weight capacity. That said, you need to get the correct size hitch ball that fits your trailer's coupler and small trailers often use a 1-7/8" hitch ball and for that you will need the 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # C40001 which has a 2,000 lb capacity.

Either amount is actually going to be more than enough for you to tow with your Malibu because I took a look at the online owner's manual for a 2005 Chevy Malibu Maxx and it says your maximum towing capacity is 1,000 lbs and you are limited to the lowest-rated component.

I assume your small trailer is within that limit and we can set you up with all the other parts you'll need as well.

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12280 you referenced will work for your vehicle and you will also need Drawbar # C45520, Pin and Clip # F-4 along with one of the aforementioned hitch balls.

The other thing you will need is a wiring harness to power your trailer's lights, Wiring Harness # C56013. It is also strongly recommended you use Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors # 11755 to help prevent any type of corrosion in your connector, which will increase its durability and extend its lifespan.
