Swagman Bike Rack for Use on Towed Vehicle

Question:

We have a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee which we pull with a Blue Ox towbar behind our Tiffin Phaeton. Is it ok to use this bike rack on the toad itself, or is it better safer to mount it on the RV itself using a dual receiver.

I do have a great option for you, however the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack # S64683 referenced in your question is not rated for use at the rear of a towed vehicle. The ride at the back of your towed Jeep Grand Cherokee is going to be quite a bit different than at the rear of the RV or a standard passenger vehicle and this can put more stress on the rack during travel. Because of this only certain carriers are tested and approved for this application.

If you want to use the Swagman Chinook then your only option will be to use a dual receiver on the RV like you mentioned, such as with the Roadmaster # RM-077-6.

If you would rather mount the rack on your Jeep though we do have some options that are approved for this use. Sticking with the Swagman brand the Dispatch 2 Bike Platform Rack # S44FR will work great with this type of setup. It is approved by Swagman to be used in this manner and it can safely support 2 bikes that are up to 45 pounds each. It features ratcheting padded hooks that will secure the bikes by their top tubes and a bike and hitch lock that will help deter theft.

I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
