Can Weight Distribution System be Added to a 17 Casita with a Large Storage Box on the Tongue
Question:
Ive got a 2005 17foot Casita SD trailer pulled by a 2004 4Runner Limited. The trailer currently has EAZ-LIFT sway control, welded to C frame, which I think is no longer effective due to rust and especially after a drastic sway incident coming out of Eisenhower tunnel on I-70. I also think I need a WD to help distribute weight. Problem is the previous owner removed the dual LP tanks and cover and replaced it with a custom metal box containing a single LP tank and a generator. The box is welded on the C beams of the A-frame and prevents bolting the WD L-brackets further than 23 inch from the ball. see photos. How could I provide new sway control and add WD to this configuration? Thanks.

Thank you for all of the information and the picture!
I do have an alternative solution for you but because of your unique setup you would have to remove the box if you wanted to use a weight distribution system. Let me know if you'd like to remove the box and I can make a weight distribution recommendation for you.
A new sway control system is much needed and for that I recommend an electronic unit like the Curt True Course # C94VV or the Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control # 335TSC-1000 depending on what kind of space you have available. The Curt is easier to install but it is 11" long so if you don't have enough room for to mount it then the Tuson is the way to go.
These use sensors to engage your trailer brakes as they detect sway. The best part about them is that you don't have to disconnect them when you are backing up!
If you happen to not have trailer brakes then the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 is what you want to use to replace your EAZ-Lift sway control.
In the place of a WD system you can use rear suspension enhancement on your 2004 Toyota 4Runner to help your towing setup to sit more level which will in turn enhance your towing experience. I recommend installing the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORSEQ because it is a simple installation that requires zero maintenance afterwards. These jounce-style springs replace the OEM bump stops on your 4Runner and they provide up to 6,000 lbs of support to your OEM suspension (please note that these will not increase your weight rating, just help with stability and ride height).
