In order to tow a trailer with your 2006 Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI you are going to need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball.
For a trailer hitch, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11701. I spoke with my contact at Curt and they stated there is no exclusions for the CDI model. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver has a 2,500 lb towing capacity and comes with a lifetime warranty. I have attached an install video and photo for you.
For a trailer wiring harness, I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # C59236 which does require splicing but there are no custom fit options so this will be your only choice. It does however come with everything that you need right down to the wiring connectors though.
For a ball mount/hitch ball, I recommend the Curt Class II Drawbar part # C45521 with the 1-7/8" Hitch Ball part # A-80 or the 2" Hitch Ball part # A-82.
