Question:

I have a 2011 Ford Flex with the factory tow package and I need to install a brake controller. Where is the plug located to attach it? Thanks for the help!

According to my research, the brake controller port on your 2011 Ford Flex should be located under the dash directly below the steering column as shown in the attached photo. Please note there is a dummy plug on the end of the port that you will need to remove in order to install the brake controller harness. If you still don't find it here please give your dealer a call to confirm its location.

If you do not already have a brake controller I have two really good options for you. The first option is the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller part # RED44FR. The Tow-Pro Elite is very similar in design to a factory trailer brake controller. There is a control box that gets installed under the dash, out of sight and then a control knob that gets mounted on your dash wherever you prefer. This will provide a very clean look and will allow you to mount it in many different locations whereas other standard will need to be in a certain position/angle. The other nice feature of this brake controller is that you can switch between proportional and a user-controlled mode which I am not aware of any other brake controller that can.

The second option is the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 which will not require you to look for the plug under your dash. The reason for this is because it does not require any modifications to the tow vehicle, it just plugs into the 7-way and you use your phone to customize settings and activate the manual override. The other major reason as to the growing popularity of this brake controller is because it uses a device you are already comfortable using (your phone), you do not need to read an entire comprehensive manual and familiarize yourself with the controls and codes to use it. Please note that if your phone loses power the brake controller will still function as normal.
