Can Over-Under Kit and a Block Lift be Used to Raise Height of Trailer
Question:
Good morning, I have a light duty home made utility trailer I am restoring right now. I do not have any measurements at this time, but I would like for the trailer’s platform to ride higher than it does right now. It currently sits on old worn out leaf springs. I am thinking something similar to a body lift lift blocks for a truck would apply in this situation, including a over-under kit. I am thinking this would help with ground clearance while pulling the trailer around the family farm the platform won’t scrape as often when turning up hill. Also, maybe I could put a bigger wheel/tire combination if a block lift is possible. Please advise.

You are definitely on the right track to raising the ride height of your trailer. We do carry over-under kit # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8" axles and kit # K71-385-00 for 3" axles that will raise the height of your trailer equivalent to the diameter of your axle plus the height of your leaf spring stack and will allow you to use a block lift. While we don't carry any block lifts we have seen this done on trailers before. The biggest thing to note is that you are raising the center of gravity for the trailer and so it will be much more prone to tipping. Since you are just using the trailer around the farm this should be okay but I don't advise towing this trailer at highway speeds.
Also be sure to replace your leaf springs. You said they are old and worn out so if you don't change those first it could really affect other parts of your trailer. I have attached a link to our selection of suspension components which includes leaf springs. Just be sure to choose the correct width, length, and weight rating. If you need help choosing the correct replacement leaf springs just let me know and I can assist you with this.
Since you would have more clearance for tires it is definitely possible to upgrade your tire size as well. Let me know if you want to go this route and I can help you figure out your best option here as well.
