Can 1,700 Pound Trunnion Spring Bars Replace 800 Pound Spring Bars for Trailer Weight Distribution
Question:
We have a reese 800# weight distribution hitch. Our current needs require an upgrade to 1700#. Can the 1700# trunnion replacement bars part #66010 work with the 800# head that we already have?

I spoke with my contact at Reese and he stated that if your 800 pound system is newer, within the last 3-1/2 to 4 years, then the higher capacity 1,700 pound bars, like # 66010, will fit. However, what you need to also look at is the shank. The shank that came with the 800 pound system is good for a maximum of 1,500 pounds, like # RP54970.
The shank used for the complete Reese 1,700 pound system is # RP54977, and it only fits in a 2-1/2 inch receiver. If you can use the 1,500 pound shank and still remain under the gross trailer weight and tongue weight then that is a way to go.
If you must have a 1,700 pound system you will have to add a Titan trailer hitch with a 2-1/2 inch receiver. Depending on the year, make, and model of the vehicle, there may or may not be a Titan hitch available. I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution for you.
