Compatibility of Parts From Flat-Towing other Vehicle on My 2012 Ford Edge

Question:

We are purchasing a 2012 Edge to be towed on all fours behind our coach. I currently have a Blachawk 2 system that was used to tow a Yukon XL. Can just the base plates be purchased or is the entire kit needed? Thanks

Besides the base plate kit and the maybe the wiring kit used, you should not have any issues using the components used to flat-tow your GMC Yukon XL to flat-tow your 2012 Ford Edge.

The item you selected, Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # 4408-1, would be the correct kit for your 2012 Ford Edge. The # 4408-1 kit features removable draw-bars to make the base plate kit less visible when the vehicle is not being towed.

In addition to a base plate kit and your Blackhawk tow bar, you should have safety chains, lighting or wiring, and a supplemental braking kit.

For lighting, if your Yukon had a hard-wired system, it may be best to purchase new wiring instead of cutting out the wiring system. I would recommend the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, part # RM-154. The other option would be to use a magnetic light kit, part # RM-2120.

Use of a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being towed is required by most states. If you do not already have a supplemental brake system, I would recommend the Roadmaster Even Brake, part # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. This system will allow you to slow down faster and help reduce wear on your motor home brakes.

Finally, you should contact your Ford dealer or consult your owners manual for additional steps needed to take when flat-towing. Some vehicles require additional parts or preparation to be towed.

I have linked an FAQ on flat-towing that you may find as a good reference.
