For the vehicle side brake lights not working, the fuses and brake light switch are the correct place to start. The wiring near the switch can be the issue, so check the wiring coming out of your switch with a circuit tester like # PTW2993. This is a fairly common issue based on my research.
Next check your bulbs and then test your wires at those locations as well. Apparently, the connections directly at the stop light switch are easy to come disconnected and the other issue can be a bad bulb as apparently the ground connections are not great. Some forums even say your hazard flashers can be an issue with this function.
I've not done the testing myself, so all I can recommend is to follow your wires testing for power with a circuit tester to locate the issue.
