Will Thule SnowCat Fit Factory Side Rails on 2017 Subaru

Question:

We have a 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited / HDK. Will the Thule Snowcat 5401 ski rack work with the Outback? It has raised rails – but they are not open except in a middle section …

I do have a solution for you, however the Thule SnowCat Ski Rack will not fit the factory side rails on your 2017 Subaru Outback Limited for the exact reason you mentioned. There just isn't enough open/exposed bar space on the rails for the units to clamp onto. The SnowCat is actually no longer in production by Thule and we do not have a similar type system.

In order to secure your skis to the roof of your Outback you will need to utilize the factory crossbars on the vehicle if you have them with a standard carrier like the excellent Thule SnowPack # TH7326 that will attach to them. This particular carrier can hold up to 6 pairs of skis (or 4 snowboards) and features soft rubber arms to prevent any scratches to them and an oversize push-button that allows you to release and open the carrier with your gloves still on.

If you only have the factory side rails and no crossbars you will need to add a set. For this I recommend the Thule WingBar System that consists of # TH711220 for the two 47 inch WingBar Crossbars, # TH460R for the Podium Foot Pack, and # THKIT4063 for the Fit Kit. These quiet, aerodynamic bars will attach to the side rails on your Outback to provide you with the needed attachment points for most roof-mounted accessories.

I have attached a couple short video demonstrations that you can check out as well.
