Is Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller Recognized by MTO in Ontario, Canada
Question:
Good evening, I live in Ontario Canada and I am wondering if this brake controller is recognized by MTO ministry of transportation. In Ontario we have to show our truck is able to control electric brakes and require yearly certification. Will this pass the certification?

I spoke with my contact at Curt regarding the Echo Brake Controller # C51180 and he said he is not certain if the controller is recognized by the MTO simply because this is not a certification they sought when testing the unit. He did say though that the controller meets all the same standards as all other Curt brake controllers, which are legal for use in Canada.
I am not sure what type of testing is required or if the MTO is looking for anything in particular with regards to the brake controller itself, but the Curt Echo while unique in its design functions the same as any proportional brake controller. It will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your tow vehicle. The manual override can also still be activated at any time by pressing the large orange circle on your smartphone so I don't foresee any issue with it passing a test where proof that it can safely power the trailer's brakes is performed.
