Recommended Weight Distribution System with Best Sway Control for Cargo Trailer Frame

Question:

Im looking for a WD system with sway control for my 7x16’ cargo trailer/toyhauler conversion. Im looking at a gross trailer weight of around 5,000lbs fully loaded. The maxium gross weight of the trailer is 7,000lbs. Looking at different systems on your site i see most require around 30” from the ball, my trailer has around 33” of exposed frame at the tongue. Frame is 6”x 2”. Im really looking for a system with the best sway control. I was looking at Item # RP66083 and Item # C17499 as well a few others but figured i should get an expert opinion since im certain returning one would cost a fortune.

For your cargo trailer/toy hauler conversion with a 5,000 lbs tongue weight I recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar # RP66084 which will fit well on your trailer frame and will also give you a total tongue weight of your loaded trailer tongue and cargo behind the rear axle between 600 and 1200 lbs. This will work well if your tongue weight stays as desired or gets heavier during the conversion (usually tongue weight ranges between 10 and 15% of the total weight and then you add the extra cargo behind your rear axle). This will require a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank like # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch diameter ball or # A-90 for a 2 inch ball.

The Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Trunnion Bar # RP66083 would work well for you with total tongue weight between 400 and 800 lbs, however the closer you creep to the top of that weight, the less the system is able to assist because the margin is so much smaller. I personally would go with the larger system.

I prefer this Reese system over the Curt TruTrack # C17499 because it is superior at fighting sway before it is an issue based on the dual cam design.
