Are There Benefits to Upgrading to Higher-Rated Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System
Question:
I have the equalizer 1000/10000 setup now for towing my travel trailer with my expedition. The trailer has a gvwr of about 7400 pounds and weights about 6400 pounds speaking roughly as I dont have my numbers in front of me. Tongue weight is around 700. I am wanting to add a second hitch for use with my f150 to tow the same trailer and was considering bumping up to the 1200/12000 equalizer hitch. Is there any benefit such as better sway control, which is something of an issue with my existing setup. Parts on my list include - 90-01-1299 90-02-4100 91-00-6100 90-02-1200 90-02-9100

If your trailer has a tongue weight of around 700 pounds then your existing 10,000/1,000 pound Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET should be sufficient. Upgrading to a 12,000/1,200 system won't provide any additional benefits to your current setup and would only be a good option if you plan to at some point move to a heavier trailer.
As it stands right now your 700 pound tongue weight falls right in the middle of your system's 600 to 1,000 pound range, which is ideal. The only difference you might notice with a higher-rated system is a bit of a rougher ride.
If you are having sway issues with your current setup I recommend making sure the trailer is level to the Expedition (and also your F-150 when the time comes) when coupled to the hitch ball. If the trailer isn't level it will increase the potential of sway during travel. You can try changing the angle of the trailer by moving the weight distribution head up and down on the shank. Also make sure that your Expedition isn't sagging too much when hooked up.
If everything with the setup looks good then another thing to look at is how your trailer is loaded. The tongue weight on your trailer should be around 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. You can try moving some weight up towards the front of the trailer to see if this helps.
If you still have a lot of sway issues please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
