Tips on Snow Tire Chain Use for a Truck with Dually Wheels

Question:

What special precautions should be taken when putting chains on a dually? Are the spoked rubber cords strong enough to hold the chains in place to prevent damage to the mud flaps and/or the body of the truck around the wheels? How do I know that the chains are tight enough to not flip off with the offset differential on my truck?

First, in order to determine if chains can be used and if there are any special things to consider for your truck you will need to consult the vehicle owners manual. If there are precautions that need to be considered, it should be in the manual.

If you find you can use tire chains you will want to make sure that the chains you do kit are properly sized for your tires. That is the best way to ensure that the chains will fit snugly on the tires and will not damage any other components on the vehicle.

Second to fit is to make sure the chains are adjusted, centered, and tightened properly. The key here is to follow the installation directions which vary among chain styles. Some chains have cams that you will tighten, drive a little, and then tighten again. Others have rubber adjusters that pull on the chains to keep them snug. Higher end chains do it all for you.

Finally, make sure that you do not exceed 30 miles per hour or the speed at which is recommended for your vehicle with chains on, whichever is lower. And do not drive on bare pavement with chains. If chains are not needed, remove them, otherwise you can experience traction problems and can cause damage to the chain and vehicle.
