First, if your 1996 Ford Ranger came with a factory 4-Way trailer connector or you installed an aftermarket 4-Way, you will need to add an # ETBC7, if the trailer has a 7-Way blade style connector, or an # ETBC6, if the trailer has 6 pole connector. If you need to add a 4-Way, you would use # 118325.
If you add a trailer connector or it already has one, the signals for the tail lights on the trailer are already converted down to the correct signals. In order to operate the electric brakes on the trailer you will need to add a brake controller.
The ETBC7 and ETBC6 kits come with all of the wiring needed to install a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our best selling controllers because it is easy to set up and use. I have included a link to the installation details for you.
I have also included a link to a video and a link to an FAQ article that explain the installation of an ETBC7. It will be nearly the same for an ETBC6.
