Troubleshooting S.H Code on Tekonsha Prodigy P2 90885
Question:
Traveled 200 miles and the controller worked fine. While preparing for our returning trip, the remote displays a slow flashing 5.4. code. It was functioning upon initial start up and system check so we disconnected power and reconnected. Same problem. Checked all connections, finally had to drive 200 miles home without trailer brakes.

I believe that the error code that you were seeing is the S.H code which flashes 2 times a second and indicates a short on the brake wire or that some test light or non-Tekonsha testers have been used.
To remedy this situation I would start by checking out the connectors for the Prodigy P2 # 90885. Make sure that they are free of corrosion and debris. If those look good then the next step is to check the brake wiring on your trailer.
The brake wire for your trailer will be connected to the pin in the 7 o'clock position on your trailer connector and will run from there to either both of your brake assemblies or will run to one brake assembly and then cross over your trailer to the other assembly. Look for any places where the wire is damage or pinched and replace with 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 and butt connectors # DW05745-5.
This should cause the S.H code you are seeing to go away. If it doesn't just let me know and I can help you troubleshoot further.
