Recommended Battery Charge Line Kit for Vehicle Being Flat Towed to Keep Battery from Draining

Question:

I have a Subaru Crosstrek with manual transmission that I flat tow behind my RV. I need to keep the key in and on ACC to unlock the steering wheel to tow, but Im finding on long tows my car battery is draining. Question: Can I disconnect the battery positive cable AFTER or BEFORE turning on the key to unlock the steering wheel in order to preserve my battery while towing? Will the lack of battery power affect the steering wheel lock, breaking system, tail light operation, etc? Or will the power to operate those systems come from my RV connection.

It doesn't matter what order you disconnect the battery and turn the key because the battery will still be disconnected from all those functions if you were to remove that positive terminal. Without knowing exactly what parts you have connected, disconnecting that battery could cause you to lose vital features like supplemental braking. I don't recommend disconnecting the battery on your vehicle and instead recommend you simply add the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25.

This will allow your vehicle battery to have a small maintenance charge from your motorhome while being towed. All the other functions of your vehicle will work as designed and your Crosstrek battery will still be ready to start when you arrive at your destination.
