According to my research, the towing capacity of your 2018 Subaru Forester is 1,000 lbs for unbraked trailers and 1,500 lbs for braked trailers. I cannot recommend you exceed these figures but the best trailer hitch for your 2018 Subaru Forester with towing in mind is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75876.
The reason that this is the best trailer hitch for you is because not only does it have one of the highest towing capacities (350 lbs tongue weight and 3,500 lbs gross trailer weight), it is also rated for use with a weight distribution system which will be a good idea for you if you will be near the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. Please keep in mind that although the trailer hitch has a 350 lb tongue weight and 3,500 lb gross trailer weight rating, you will still be limited to the vehicle's towing capacity of 1,000 lbs for unbraked trailers and 1,500 lbs for braked trailers.
In addition to the trailer hitch you are going to need a wiring harness, ball mount, and possibly a brake controller in order to tow the trailer. For a trailer wiring harness, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118467 because it is cost effective and we have found over the years that Tekonsha brand wiring harnesses tend to be the most reliable.
If your trailer has brakes then in addition to the 4-way wiring harness you will also need a 7-way trailer wiring harness and a brake controller. For these two items I recommend using the Universal Installation Kit part # ETBC7 with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885. The Universal Installation Kit is one of the few options that includes pretty much everything you need to install a brake controller excluding the 4-way and the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller has integrate safeguards in addition to containing a lifetime warranty.
The best weight distribution system for you will need to be based off of your total tongue weight which consists of the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Based on the towing capacity of your vehicle, the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System part # FA92-00-0600 should be a good choice for you since it is rated for up to 600 lbs of tongue weight. You will also need a hitch ball part # C48810 for 1-7/8" or part # A-90 for 2".
I have attached several review/install videos for you below.
