Why Do CURT Trailer Hitch Balls 40038 and A-90 have Such Different Towing Capacities

How can the Curt 40038 2inch ball with the 1inch shank have a higher GTW 12,000 lbs than the Curt A-90 2inch ball with the 1-1/4inch shank 8,000 lbs? Thanks

I spoke with my contact at CURT and he told me what gives the CURT Hitch Ball, # 40038, more strength is the way it is threaded and that it is heat treated beyond what # A-90 is so that gives the 40038 the higher rating. He added that even though 40038 has a smaller shank, the way that the metal was finished allowed it to be tested and rated higher.

The nut on the Curt hitch ball #A-90 requires a 1-7/8 inch wrench or socket. The nut fits on the 1-1/4 inch shank of the ball. This ball is designed to fit draw bars that are 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick. It was a capacity of 10,000 pounds.
