Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Install of 2003 Chevy Tracker Where Trailer Lighting is Very Dim
Question:
I recently bought a 2003 Tracker with the Curt 55372 wiring harness and hitch, both of which were installed by the previous owner about a year ago. When using a circuit tester, there is power to the vehicle plug end and everything works fine, but when hooked up to the trailer, only tail lights work consistently but not very bright. Turn signals and brake lights work only momentarily and then stop working, or, more recently, do not work at all. This happens with both my utility and boat trailers, and I know the lights on both trailers work well with my 2012 Toyota Rav 4, which also has a Curt wiring harness, although it is a powered model and the 55372 is not. Both trailers used to work with the Tracker, but now dont seem to. I checked the harness to vehicle plug and it seems fine, although I noticed the Curt black box was not secured to the vehicle and was able to rattle around. Do these Curt units ever go bad?

When not secured and allowed to rattle around the Curt trailer wiring harnesses like the # C55372 are known to suffer internal damage and stop working properly. They are actually very known for having this issue. I would almost guarantee that's your problem.
