Can 2017 Ford F-150 with 2.7 Liter EcoBoost Engine Tow 8,100 lb Trailer

Question:

HI I just purchased a used 2015 Ford F-150 2.7L with ecoboost super crew cab pick up truck. The hitch that exists shows V-5 with weight carrying of 5,000 lbs and distribution of 10,000. I was under the impression that i can tow gross trailer weight of 8100 lbs but someone said only 6500 lbs. How do i know which is true? Thank you!

When in doubt you should check with a local Ford dealer and they'll let you know exactly what your truck can tow. From what I found online it looks like your 2015 Ford F-150 with a 2.7 liter EcoBoost engine has a capacity of 8,500 lbs. Not to confuse you more but the trailer hitch installed on the vehicle will sometimes have a different capacity as well. So your hitch has 5,000 lbs total trailer weight capacity weight carrying and 10,000 lbs weight distribution capacity.

That means that if you tow a trailer without a weight distribution system you'd have a 5,000 lb overall capacity (since you are only as strong as the weakest link), and then when you use a weight distribution system you'd have an 8,500 lb capacity. So to tow a trailer with a weight of 8,100 lbs with your current setup you'll need a weight distribution system. The Reese Strait Line part # RP66084 would be your best option as it has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs and features best sway control that fights sway before it starts.

For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
