Expert Reply:
When your Pro Series brake controller like # 80550 or Tekonsha POD # 39523 is connected to your vehicle, you do not need to turn it on and off or disconnect it. Brake controllers are all designed to use a sleep mode that allows them to keep their settings programmed so you don't need to reset the settings each time you turn on your vehicle. Disconnecting it will remove your settings. The sleep setting normally takes a few minutes after you turn the vehicle off for it to kick in and then it keeps a very minimal draw like a vehicle clock that can stay for many months at a time without draining your battery. It is awakened from that sleep mode when it sees a draw on the brake output wire from a trailer connection and the brakes are applied for the first time.
