Ball Mount or Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a 2008 Toyota Tundra and 5K Trailer

Question:

I have an WD hitch rated at 10,000 lbs with bars that I use on my 2008 Tundra to tow my 5,500 lb trailer. I have ongoing problems with the brackets on the trailer arms walking forward as I drive. Working with folks from the WD manufacturer I have tried many solutions but none so far have been successful. I am considering using this ball mount to replace the WD hitch. With my big truck and this trailer should I be ok using a regular ball mount? Is this the best ball mount to use?

For a 2008 Toyota Tundra, the recommended ball mount is the Curt Ball Mount, # D-4 and Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3. However, you will probably want to go with something with a higher capacity given the weight of your trailer. I have included a link to our ball mount FAQ article that has some tips on choosing the correct ball mount.

Since you were using a weight distribution hitch, I recommend replacing it with a different type of weight distribution. For a trailer weighing 5,500 pounds gross trailer weight, that puts your tongue weight at about 550 to 825 pounds (10 to 15 percent). If your tongue weight is on the lower end of that spectrum (400-800 pounds tongue weight), go with Reese Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit # RP67509. This is a complete system including a shank so you will just need a ball, # 19286 (2-5/16 inch diameter) or # A-90 (2 inch diameter).

If you are at the higher end of the range (600-1,200 pounds tongue weight), go with Reese Weight Distribution Kit, # RP66542. This kit also comes with a shank so you would just need one of the balls listed above.

I have included a link to our weight distribution FAQ article for you.
