Part # 8880683 is the new part for the rear support. 1. Do i need to replace both the front and rear if just the rear is broken? 2. Does this replacement support allow the SkyBox to be opened from both the left driver and right passenger sides? 3. If not, does it have to be installed in a certain direction to allow opening on the driver side?

The correct rear lid support for the Yakima Skybox 16 is the part # 8880683 that you referenced. This will allow the box to open from either side like it currently is set up to do.

I was able to get confirmation from Yakima that the Replacement Lid Support for Yakima Cargo Boxes #8880683 is the correct lid support arm for your 2011 model Yakima SkyBox 16.

Yakima has rolled over their part numbers since that answer and replaced it with two hinges that work with all of their cargo boxes. For your Skybox 16, you'll just need two of part #8880683.
