Hitch Extender Needed for a Bike Rack on a 2007 Jeep Wrangler with a Spare Tire

Question:

I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler with a Goodyear Wrangler tire for spare. What would you recommend for my bike rack to clear it?

The Brophy Hitch Extender # HE06 that you referenced is a great way to add 7" of clearance for your bike rack. This is rated for a max of 3,500 lbs gross towing weight and 350 lbs tongue weight but it will reduce your trailer hitch capacity by 50%. Since this will most likely make your trailer hitch capacity lower you will be limited by that capacity.

The other problem with extenders is that they cause more play in the hitch receiver as well. You can help remedy this with the use of a support strap like part # 18050. The weight capacity and extra movement are the result of any of the hitch extenders on the linked page.

If the weight capacity becomes an issue then I recommend going with a different bike rack. The Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR is a favorite among Jeep owner's who have a spare tire like you do. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the upright of the carrier measures 13-1/2" so you should have no problems with clearance. Attached is a review video for you to check out if you decide to go this route.
