Prodigy P3 Brake Controller Install in 2016 Kia Sorento Without Splicing Into Brake Switch Wiring
Question:
I bought a ETBC7 Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller for a Sorento 2016 V6. I was wondering if there is an alternate method to get the brake signal. Can I run a cable to the back to get the brake signal from de trailer wire to avoid cutting the Sorento original cable. I think i have seen a video with this procedure but cant find it now,

To get your brake light signal to install your Prodigy P3 # 90195 brake controller, you can tap into your trailer wiring harness # C56256 prior to the converter box to capture that brake signal and run a separate wire to the brake controller. This is not the ideal method of tapping into the cold side of your brake light switch using a quick splice connector from your # ETBC7 kit, but it can work.
I do want to point out that the splicing into your stop light switch will not void your vehicle warranty in case that is your hesitation with the recommended installation method. When you install an aftermarket part on your vehicle like a trailer brake controller in this case, you are protected by the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act. This act states, in part, that unless the installation and the part caused a problem then the warranty cannot be voided and this installation will not cause a problem. I recommend looking it up online for a more in depth explanation if desired.
If you still choose to install the brake controller outside of the recommended method, you will need to check the input wiring of your trailer wiring harness near the plastic connectors using a circuit tester to isolate the brake signal from the turn signal and running light signal. If it is isolated, you can use the quick splice in that location and run # 10-1-1 wire back to your brake controller to attach to the red wire that connects to your controller. If it is not isolated, then you will need to use the Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter # 118158 to isolate that brake signal after the converter box.
