Compatibility of Saris Freedom # 4026F with Hitch Extender on 2009 Toyota RAV4

Can I use a 8 inch hitch extension adapter with the Saris SuperClamp SA4026F to get around the spare tire on a 2009 RAV4?

The Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX 4 Bike Platform Rack # SA4026F has a measurement of 14 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack when folded down. When folded up the closest part of the rack is 5-1/4 inches.
When using a hitch like the etrailer # e98864, the distance from the center of the hitch pin to the outermost part of your spare tire is 7-8 inches. You will still have plenty of clearance with the bike rack when in the carrying position, but it will not fold. You can use an adapter like # e88YR with the bike rack to give you that additional clearance so it will fold, but there are a few things to consider.
When using an adapter, the tongue weight of your trailer hitch is reduced by 50% due to the extra torque on the hitch due to the extension. This means your bike rack will have move vertical movement, but your hitch will be able to handle the application with this rack weighing just 63 lbs and carrying up to 190 lbs. As long as you are under 112 lbs of bikes, you will be under your max capacity when using the hitch extender.
