Finding Reverse Light Circuit When Adding 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter
Question:
Hello, Ive successfully installed the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector Item # 118270 on my 2016 GMC Acadia however I have a boat that requires a 5-pole system for surge breaks. To accomplish this, I purchased the 4-Pole to 5-Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter Item # 47515, but Im having trouble locating the backup wire in the T-One wiring harness I installed. Can you please let me know which wire in the T-One wiring harness represents the backup wire?

The additional blue wire on the 4-Pole to 5-Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter # 47515 is to connect to the reverse taillight wiring feed on your vehicle. You can find the reverse feed toward the back of the vehicle, not on the 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector Item # 118270. A 4-way connector doesn't use the reverse light circuit and that's why you need a 5-way for your trailer.
To find the reverse taillight feed you will have to open the rear tailgate, you are going to get your power source from a cord that goes from the vehicle to the outside hatch at the inside top middle potion of the hatch. When you locate that area, you just pull up on the black rubber portion, slide the grommet up the wire. That will give you the access you need to get to the wires.
Now, you will have to test the wires to determine which one gives a power signal when the vehicle is in reverse. Some of the wires are going to have constant 12-volt power that run through them. Some of the are only going activated when the blinker is on or when the emergency flashers are on. You want to be sure that whichever one that you're going to hook into only comes live or gives you a signal when the vehicle is in reverse. With somebody sitting in your vehicle, have them put the vehicle in reverse with it running and place their foot on the brake so you are not in any danger. We just need to run through and check our wires with a tester such as # PTW2993.
Remember to engage the emergency brake too they are testing in reverse gear.
I have a video attached that will show you the entire process of finding the wire and completing this process.
