What is the Towing Capacity of a 2015 Jeep Cherokee
Question:
Question: Every site I have read says jeep gc v6 engine has a rating of like 6200 lbs towing properly equipped tow package but I cant find the tow capacity with out the factory tow packagae Expert Reply: I referred to the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners manual to find what the Max Gross Trailer Weight rating. According to the manual, on page 531, the max trailer weight rating is determined by your Jeeps drivetrain. For the 3.6L V6 with either 4x2 or 4x4 models, the max trailer weight rating is the 6,200 lbs you listed. This will be with or without towing package. The 6,200 lbs weight is the max the 2015 Grand Cherokee will be able to tow safely. However, although your Jeep has a max trailer weight rating of 6,200 lbs, you will be only able to tow a trailer that weighs as much as your lowest rated towing component will allow. For an example, the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # C13182, is a custom-fit trailer hitch for the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, the hitch has a 5,000 lbs standard towing capacity. Therefore, with this hitch the allowed max trailer weight would be 5,000 lbs. I found different info none of which mentions 6200 lb! - help: 3.2L Pentastar® V6 VVT engine 271 hp 239 lb-ft of torque Nine-speed automatic transmission Latitude Max towing: 2,000 pounds, FWD / 2,000 pounds 4x4 Trailer Tow Package Max towing: 4,500 pounds, FWD / 4,500 pounds 4x4 Limited Max towing: 2,000 pounds, FWD / 2,000 pounds 4x4 Trailer Tow Package Max towing: 4,500 pounds, FWD / 4,500 pounds 4x4 Trailhawk® Max towing: 2,000 pounds, 4x4 Trailer Tow Package Max towing: 4,500 pounds, 4x4

If you are ever in doubt about the towing capacity of the vehicle then there is a sure fire way to tell and you will not need to know any of the options the vehicle is equipped with in order to do so. This process includes opening the driver door and looking for a white sticker. This sticker will have a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) figure. If you take the GVWR and subtract that from the GCWR then that will give you the maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) you can tow with your vehicle. This above figure will take into consideration both whether or not you have the tow package and all other factors that have an effect on towing capacity. This process can also be used on any vehicle as well.
If your 2015 Jeep Cherokee did not have the tow package then chances are you will need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. For a trailer hitch I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13172 which is a direct fit that will not require any drilling. For the wiring harness I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # HM11142464 which is a plug and play option that will not require any splicing. For a ball mount I recommend the Convert-A-Ball Adjustable-Height Ball Mount part # TK5007 with the 2" Hitch Ball part # 63845.
I have attached an install video of the hitch and review video of the ball mount for you as well.
