Converting a 6-Way connector to a 7-Way connector will be easy. A 6-Way connector already has most of the functions used by a 7-Way, the only one missing is a circuit for reverse lights. If the trailer you plan to tow does not need a reverse light circuit, you will not even need to add one.
You will need a 7-Way RV style vehicle side trailer connector. I recommend going with the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow, # HM48470, since it handles 7-Way, 5-Way, and 4-Way trailer connectors.
In order to connect the wires to the back of this connector, you will need to test the wires of the 6-Way with a circuit tester like # PTW2993, and label them by function. Then, crimp on ring terminals on the ends of the wires to connect to the back of the new trailer connector in the following manner:
1 o'clock position = running lights
3 o'clock position = left turn/brake light
5 o'clock position = ground
7 o'clock position = brake controller output
9 o'clock position = right turn/brake light
11 o'clock position = 12-volt battery power
Center position = reverse lights
If you need the reverse light circuit, take a length of # 10-1-1 wire and connect it to a reverse light wire behind one of the reverse lights on the truck. Mount the new connector in a convenient place and that is all there is to it.
