A 4-flat trailer connector is responsible for carrying four functions which are usually brake, left turn, right turn, and tail lights. I am not familiar with a 4-way trailer connector that uses 8 wires as I do not see what the other wires could be for. The best way to determine the correct replacement would be to test each of the wires for function with a circuit tester and then replace the connector with the one that has the slots for the functions you need. It may be that instead of splicing the wires together for each taillight that they are both ran to the plug which would explain the excess wires.
I have attached a wiring help article to assist you with this process. When you determine which connector you need you can use one of the following:
4-Flat part # HM38168
5-Flat part # HM47913
6-Pole part # PK11604
7-Blade part # PK12706
