What is Needed to Convert Disc Brakes on Older Trailer to Electric Over Hydraulic System
Question:
I need to update my brakes and install a current style electric over hydraulic brake system on my truck. My camper is a 27ft 1977 airstream overlander. What information do you need to help put a kit together for me and approximately what will the total cost be? Thank you

I have attached a great article that walks through all the parts needed to install electric over hydraulic disc brakes on a trailer, including how to locate the correct assemblies.
If you are keeping the trailer's existing disc brake assemblies, and simply converting to an electric over hydraulic system, all you will need is a new actuator and wiring, along with a trailer brake controller for the tow vehicle. For the actuator, I recommend taking a look at the HydraStar # HS381-9067, which also includes the needed trailer wiring and breakaway system.
For the tow vehicle brake controller, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a proportional controller with an easy to read display and continuous diagnostics. If you can tell me the year, make, and model of your vehicle, I will be happy to recommend the additional parts you may need to install the controller.
If you are also looking to replace the disc brake assemblies themselves with new units, you will need to determine the trailer's axle capacity, the bearings used on your current hubs, along with your existing bolt pattern. The bearing numbers should be stamped right onto the bearings themselves. For example, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R35S is designed for 3,500 pound axles and uses the # L68149 inner bearing and # L44649 outer bearing. It has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.
I have attached a link that will take you directly to our available selection of disc brakes that you can look through. If you can tell me any of the above information, I will be happy to recommend a complete setup for your Airstream Overlander. All of the pricing information will be listed on the product pages.
