For a great, but economically priced brake controller, I highly recommend taking a look at the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160. This is a really nice proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Tacoma. It features a digital display, 3 boost levels, and continuous diagnostics to alert you of potential issues.
In order to install the controller on your Toyota Tacoma that is equipped with the factory 7-Way, you will just need the Plug-In Adapter # 3040-P. One end of the adapter will plug into the brake controller itself, while the other end will connect directly to the built-in port beneath the truck's dash.
I have attached a short video demonstration on this brake controller, along with the written instructions that you can check out.
