Determining Correct Reese Sidewinder for Trailer and Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2017 Ford F-250

Question:

Hello! I am purchasing a 2009 Big Country 32 Foot 5th wheel. I am using a 2017 Ford F250 and after reading one of your experts opinions am sure that I would like to go with a standard fixed 5th wheel hitch and a sidewinder pin box as opposed to a sliding hitch. However, I do not have the measurements of the current pin box. I have a serial number and some pictures of the hitch, as well as the vin of the trailer, but that is about it. How can I be sure that I purchase the correct sidewinder fit? Is there anything that you can do to help?

If you would like to replace the pin box on your new 2009 Big Country 5th Wheel Trailer, you will need to determine what pin box model the trailer is equipped with. There are a few possible ways to do this, but since you don't yet have the trailer on hand, you may just need to contact the trailer manufacturer (Heartland) directly.

If you call the manufacturer with your VIN, this is usually enough information for them to be able to find what pin box was installed at the factory. Otherwise, you might be able to ask the seller go out to the trailer and look for a model number, which should be located on a sticker or stamped right onto the pin box itself.

If you are able to find the pin box model number, please let me know and I will be happy to make a specific recommendation for a compatible Sidewinder.

For a fixed fifth-wheel hitch, I recommend taking a look at the Reese M5 # RP30928 if your truck does not have the factory rail kit. This is an excellent, 20,000 pound hitch that features a forged, single-piece, self-latching jaw for a secure connection to the trailer and it is compatible with Sidewinder pin boxes. For the Custom Rail Kit that is confirmed to fit your F-250, I recommend part # RP56017-53.
