Side-Mount Trailer Jack to Avoid Tailgate Clearance Issue

Question:

Hi I have a 2011 ram 1500 with a 6.5 feet I need to leave the tailgate down when I put my golf cart in the truck the problem is than I can’t hook my rv up because the tailgate hits the jack. My rv weights around 7000 the tongue weight is 725. It also has weight distribution and sway control. What do you recommend. Thanks.

Expert Reply:

Usually the best fix for tailgate-to-jack clearance issues is an extra-long ball mount that will move the trailer further away from the tailgate, such as # BM20, but since you are using a weight distribution/sway control hitch you cannot use this solution. So, the best option in your case is to change to a side-frame-mounted jack instead of the tongue-mounted jack.

The linked page displays all side-mount jacks, both jacks with caster wheels like # FXPD15L and jacks with foot plates like # PS1400300303.
