Tapping into a Reverse Light Wire to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2017 Ford Expedition
Question:
I need to add a 7 blade connector to my 2017 Ford Expedition EL. it currently has a 4 way flat connector. Where is the best location to splice into the reverse power wire? In my trailer, I have to power LED backup lights and a surge brake lock out solenoid. In the vehicle taillight, the reverse power wire looks like an 18 or 20 gauge wire and maybe too small to power the trailer. Is there a better spot to splice into the vehicles reverse light power wire?

You could use a fuse tap and get the reverse light signal from the fuse box on your 2017 Ford Expedition. But this will only work if the reverse lights are the only thing on that circuit. Otherwise the reverse lockout and trailer reverse lights could come on unintentionally. It looks like in the fuse box under the hood there is a trailer tow back up lamp circuit that could be used but it may not have power since your Expedition doesn't have the HD tow package. The vehicle reverse light circuit is fused with the CHMSL and EC mirror so it would not be a good option.
But considering that LED lights draw very little power and reverse lockouts are generally around 8 watts the reverse light wire at the tail light is likely more than adequate.
