Wiring and Brake Controller for 2002 Toyota Tacoma
Question:
What do I need. Have 3 way harness. Need 4 way. New trailer has brakes

Expert Reply:
For a trailer with brakes you will need a brake controller, a 4-way, and a 7-way on your 2002 Tacoma. There is not a 3-way harness, at least that will work with trailers, because it would not give you all the needed functions. It is possible you already have a 4-way but may not be taking the ground wire into account.
If you do not have a 4-way though, to activate your trailer brakes you first need to install Wiring Harness # 118379, which will give your Tacoma a 4-flat connector. Then you are going to need Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7, which will give you the rest of the needed components to install a brake controller, including a 4-way to 7-way adapter and circuit breakers.
As for the brake controller itself, I strongly recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195; it is the most popular model we carry due to its effectiveness and ease of use. It will activate your trailer's brakes immediately in proportion to your Tacoma's brakes and offers three different boost levels so you can adjust your braking power.
The P3 levels automatically, has constant diagnostic checks, contains safeguards which defend your controller against shorts, and features an LCD display which is much easier to read than that of other controllers. This controller has been met with nearly universal praise; it has been reviewed by our customers more than 2,000 times and is averaging close to 5 out of 5 stars.
