Sounds like you are wiring in a breakaway system to your trailer like the part # 20099. I attached a diagram that shows how it all connects to a trailer's wiring. Basically the switch installs between the breakaway battery and the brake output circuit of the trailer so that when the pin is pulled the battery puts it's current onto the brake assemblies.
