Troubleshooting Voyager Trailer Brake Controller 39510 Installation in 1990 Dodge Ram Pickup
Question:
I have just recently installed a Tekonsha Voyager on my 2004 F150. Upon connecting the power wire, the red LED indicator light turned on and has remained on. There is no trailer connected to my truck and I have checked to make sure I have correctly connected the wires. Is the unit faulty or out of adjustment?

Expert Reply:
If your Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller # 39510 shows a red LED light without a trailer connected and without you pressing the manual override lever, then the cause is likely to be either a short in the wiring or that the unit's red input signal wire is connected incorrectly.
The RED wire takes in the brake light switch signal to tell the controller to generate trailer brake power. This connection must be made to the COLD side of the brake light switch, to the wire that carries power ONLY when you press the brake pedal and at no other time.
You can use a tester like # PTW2993 to confirm you have accessed the COLD side of the switch. You can also refer to the linked video to see how to use the tester and to the articles for more help troubleshooting.
